Akira Sushi is a refined sushi restaurant tucked along Ventura Boulevard in Studio City, known for its meticulously crafted nigiri and carefully composed dishes. This isn’t your casual sushi stop; it invites diners who appreciate a thoughtfully paced dining experience where the chef’s technique and ingredient quality come into sharp focus.

Inside, the atmosphere is calm and intimate, especially if you manage to snag a seat at the sushi bar. It’s here that chef Leo’s artistry really shines—engaging with guests through light conversation while assembling each piece with quiet precision. The vibe isn’t flashy or loud; rather, it feels like stepping into a space where sushi is treated with respect more akin to a fine craft than just a quick meal.

The menu reflects a balance between traditional Japanese offerings and nuanced, elevated touches—think edamame with variations including garlic or truffle oil, a variety of fresh sashimi salads, and hand rolls that range from classic Tekka Maki to spicier options like spicy scallop or shrimp. While the menu alone suggests a solidly curated selection, many diners come here for the omakase experience, allowing Chef Leo to showcase seasonal fish and subtle flavor combinations that linger beyond the plate.

This spot tends to attract locals who are sushi enthusiasts and visitors who seek a measured, savory meal rather than a quick bite. Weeknights and weekend dinners at the sushi bar are where the energy settles into a steady rhythm, ideal for those who want to savor each bite and chat with the chef. It’s less about noisy crowds and more about appreciating fresh, excellently prepared fish paired with thoughtful seasonings, as evident from specials like amberjack belly with truffle oil or a buttery fatty tuna that melts without fuss.

Overall, Akira Sushi feels like a restaurant that invites you to slow down and appreciate sushi as an interplay of texture, freshness, and subtle seasoning. If you’re someone who values technique and a quiet yet engaging dining rhythm, this Studio City spot offers an experience that resonates beyond just the meal.

How do I even begin to explain how special this place is? Forget what you think exceptional sushi is. Chef Leo has raised the bar with Akira. He is an artist. Exacting, meticulous, and a delight. I took my daughter for her birthday and we sat at the sushi bar and went the omakase route. Amberjack belly with a light brush of truffle oil and a touch of sea salt - OMG. The fatty tuna just melts. There was a course of these beautiful little hand peeled and marinated cherry tomatoes - gorgeous and delicious. Don't hesitate, just go. You will not regret it.

Leo's the best! My sister and I have been going to him for our sushi cravings for years. His ... Recipes? I'm not sure what it's called when it comes to nigiri... Always taste great, and I haven't found the same quality or taste elsewhere. He's always smiling and joking around with his diners, too, so the sushi bar seating is highly recommended. My pictures don't do the dishes justice, so if you're ever thinking about heading out to Studio City, definitely stop by. Or just come out just for the sushi, because it's worth it!

We decided to go in and tried omakase here. To our surprise, it was fabulous. In our course, the nigiri sushi given to us embodied the traditional culture that usually can find in high end sushi restaurants in LA or Tokyo. The chef was able to bring out the fish flavor while striking a perfect balance between texture to sauce. Definitely will come back for another run. (Will provide another update after another random visit with friends.)

Akira is some of the best sushi you will find on the West Coast. The chef, Leo, is creative and passionate with his craft. The fish in unbelievably fresh. Ask about the off menu specials, and let Leo finish your dinner with chef’s choice. You’ll have dreams about it

Went here 5/1/2024 for lunch service Hostess greeted me at the door. Sat at the bar and got Chirashi and Hokkaido Uni. Chirashi comes with soup and salad. Miso soup has tofu and chives, house salad has great dressing mixed in and the tomato on top the skin was peeled, sweetness burst in my mouth! Delicious. Chirashi has a mountain variety full of fish. Comes with what looks like octopus, sweet shrimp, crab, salmon, tuna, chutoro, albacore, yellowtail, seared white fish, 2 sweet scallops. The rice underneath was seasoned with seaweed and pickled seaweed. Very tasty! Also the rice is from hokkaido! Really great rice texture! Hokkaido Uni was very delicious! Definitely a treat! Service is great! My tea cup was never empty. Will definitely come again and try their omakase.

I had one of the best sushi dining experience in Studio City. As a true sushi lover, Akira's food was absolutely delicious, their omakase was super worth it, lots of expensive ingredients for that price, staffs are very knowledgeable and helpful as well, most importantly - chef Leo is fun and take his work very seriously - he is a true perfectionist! There are so many sushi places on Ventura Blvd but this is the spot I'd come back for sure, you can get fresh sushi anywhere but you can't get the same experience elsewhere! You can see I really had a great time! :)

The chef is amazing to arrange all the magical food and explaining details of each dish! It’s far beyond ordinary sushi place, probably the best omakase experience in town. I am lucky that there were three types of uni available that night. Everything fresh, beautifully decorated, special and yum!
